Q&A

Q1:

When should I use XML , and when should I use forms?

A1:

For simple applications such as mail merge, forms are probably easier. For complex applications where you're integrating with other applications, XML ”particularly in conjunction with Smart Documents ”is probably the way to go. For form-based enterprise applications, Microsoft InfoPath is an XML-based tool specifically designed for collecting information with forms.

Q2:

What about ActiveX controls? How do they fit in?

A2:

They can be used in conjunction with XML and Smart Documents, just like in standard Word documents.

Q3:

What is the difference between XML and WordML?

A3:

XML is a generalized language for describing the markup of data (also known as documents). It is the language in which a document-specific schema is defined, and it is also the language in which WordML is defined. WordML enables Word to describe both a document's metadata and the formatting applied to it in a way that is compatible with other XML applications, and which allows Word documents to be generated by applications other than Word.
