Chapter 7. Installing the Oracle 8 i and 9 i Database ServerOracle has done an amazing job with the 8 i and 9 i Install wizards. As you will see, in a matter of about 20 to 30 minutes, you will have your Oracle 8 i or 9 i server and a database operational. The wizard will guide you through all the necessary steps. Before you start, make sure you have all your licenses, your database name (we'll be calling ours CWE1P ), and enough room on your server ”2GB. With these requirements met, you're ready to go! Warning The installation process is memory intensive ! A low-memory server ”128MB, for example ”will be excruciatingly s-l-o-w. Be prepared to spend at least an hour . And if you are using a low-memory server, maximize your paging file to something like 600 to 1000MB! With W2K, you can change the paging-file size on the fly, so set it very high and change it after the installation. I do not advise using a server with less than 128MB of memory. Not only is the installation more complicated, but it will be so slow that you might as well plan on spending the better part of a day watching your memory manager show "FULL" and listening to your disk drive churn. Then when your users log on, be prepared for so many complaints that you'll wish you had decided to grow roses for a career! |
