A document's history is recorded by SharePoint Portal Server to help track changes and eliminate the possibility of someone overwriting another user's modifications. Before a document is edited it needs to be checked out of SharePoint Portal Server, preventing others from changing it until it is checked back in. When a document is checked back in SharePoint Portal
Server assigns a new version number and the previous version is archived. When documents are checked out, the most recent version is retrieved unless the user specifically selects an earlier version.
