This is the Windows 2000 Microsoft Management Console (MMC) application that manages Commerce Server resources, sites, applications, and Web Servers.
A Commerce Server resource provides functionality to applications in a Commerce Server site. Normally consisting of COM components, which are controlled from the application Web pages, resource properties are stored in the Commerce Server administration database (see Figure 5.5).
Figure 5.5: Commerce Server Manager.
Resources can be global or site specific. Global resources include the direct mailer engine used to send personalized e-mail to users, predictor service to identify usage trends, the data warehouse, authentication and identi- fication services, and profiles. Site-specific resources are relevant only to a specific site you are running and include application configuration data, such as billing and payment information, campaign configurations, the product catalog, shopping-basket transactions, and shipping/tax data.
Most Commerce Server sites have both a user site for visitors to make purchases and a business desk or administration site to control businessrelated functions. Both of these sites use the Commerce Server object model and ASP pages to modify resources such as the administration database.
