Similar to BizTalk Server (see Chapter 4), Visual Studio.NET comes with a directory watching component. A directory can be monitored, and as soon as a file appears or changes, an event can be fired by the monitoring component.
Performance counters are an important way of measuring how an application is coping under pressure. This has been a feature of Windows NT and Windows 2000 for awhile, and Visual Studio.NET has a performance counter component that enables Visual Studio to read a specific performance parameter or to write to a performance counter. This can be used during an application design phase or as an ongoing measure of performance, maybe raising an event to the Event Log if a bottleneck is in danger of appearing.
