Chapter 8. Understanding User and Group Accounts

Chapter 8. Understanding User and Group Accounts

Managing accounts is one of your primary tasks as a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 administrator. Chapter 7 , "Core Active Directory Administration," discussed computer accounts. This chapter examines user and group accounts. You use user accounts to enable individual users to log on to the network and access network resources. You use group accounts to manage resources for multiple users. The permissions and privileges you assign to user and group accounts determine which actions users can perform, as well as which computer systems and resources they can access.

Although you might be tempted to give users wide access, you need to balance the user's need for job- related resources with your need to protect sensitive resources or privileged information. For example, you wouldn't want everyone in the company to have access to payroll data. Consequently, you'd make sure that only those who need that information have access to it.
