Gathering Extra Information with Hidden Fields

A hidden field is something the user doesn t actually see when filling out the form you ve created. Sometimes, hidden fields are essential to provide information that a script, database, or file needs to process the form information. A hidden field can also serve as a note to you, visible when you receive the data from the file. When you create a hidden field, you can leave information about the name of the form, the place it was published, or the version number of the form.

A hidden field contains two attributes: a Name (a keyword associated with the field), and a Value (the version number, date, or other information contained in the field). To create a hidden field, follow these steps:

  1. Right-click anywhere in the form, then choose Form Properties from the shortcut menu.

  2. When the Form Properties dialog box appears, click Advanced.

  3. When the Advanced Form Properties dialog box appears (see Figure 15-9), click Add.

  4. Enter a name and value for the hidden field, and click OK.

Place a Hidden Field Wherever You Want
Since you don t actually see the hidden field in the FrontPage window, it doesn t matter where you place the cursor before you create the field. In order to modify or remove hidden fields, right-click the form, then choose Form Properties from the shortcut menu. In the Advanced Form Properties dialog box, select the field you want to change, and then click Modify or Remove.
