Understanding Sites, Workspaces, Libraries, and Lists

It can be easy to get confused between sites, workspaces, libraries, and lists. Figure 11.1 provides examples of a Windows SharePoint Services site collection residing under a SharePoint Portal Server 2003 portal. A site collection consists of a top-level site, subsites, and the content contained in those sites. In Figure 11.1 there is one top-level site, one subsite, one document workspace, and one meeting workspace. As the legend in Figure 11.1 shows, there are lists and libraries of different types throughout the structure.

The process of creating sites and workspaces is outlined below, and libraries will be examined in detail in this chapter. More information about SharePoint lists can be found in Chapter 12, "Managing and Using SharePoint Lists."
