Summary


This chapter tackled the task of covering the integration between Microsoft Word 2003, Excel 2003, and Outlook 2003 and the SharePoint 2003 products to enhance document management and collaboration practices. This chapter only scratched the surface of what is possible but pointed out some key advantages of using the Office System 2003 products with SharePoint 2003.

A brief summary of these advantages are

  • Word 2003, Excel 2003, Visio 2003, Project 2003, and PowerPoint 2003 These applications offer the full Shared Workspace task pane to connect the user with a wealth of information contained in the SharePoint 2003 site or workspace. With this functionality, the user is aware of the other users who have rights to the site or workspace, the other documents shared in the same library or workspace, URLs available on the site or workspace, and access to metadata attached to the document. A document can be saved to a SharePoint 2003 site and a document workspace created at the same time, which the user can customize and turn into a collaborative space, managed by that user.

  • Excel 2003 Tightly integrated with SharePoint 2003 lists and libraries, which can import from Excel spreadsheets and export to them as well.

  • Outlook 2003 Allows the creation of a document workspace when an attachment is sent, as well as allowing the creation of a meeting workspace when an appointment is created. These workspaces can be helpful for documents and meetings involving many (more than 10 as a guideline) participants. Outlook 2003 contacts can be imported into the SharePoint 2003 contacts Web Part, or exported to a read-only contact list. Events from a SharePoint 2003 Events Web Part can be exported in read-only format to an Outlook Calendar.
