Installing and Configuring the Personal Web Server

ColdFusion Server runs on a variety of platforms, including HP-UX, Solaris, Linux, Windows 2000, Windows NT, and Windows 95/98/Millennium Edition/XP. For you to install and use ColdFusion server on your personal computer, you must first have a Web server installed.

In the following tasks , you will set up ColdFusion Server on Windows 98, which is the most common platform for home users. (If you are using Windows 95 or Windows Millennium Edition, setup is similar.) Because Personal Web Server comes with Windows 98, we will install and use this application as our Web server. If you already have Personal Web Server installed, you can skip this section.

  1. Insert the Windows 98 CD into your CD-ROM drive.

The screen shown here should appear automatically when you insert your Windows 98 CD into your CD-ROM drive. If it does not come up automatically, select Start > Run and type X:\cdsample\autorun\autorun.exe, where X is the letter of the CD-ROM drive where your Windows disk is located.

  2. Click the Add/Remove Software icon. Click the Windows Setup tab and scroll down to Internet Tools. Click the Details button.

When you click the Add/Remove Software icon, the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog appears. In this dialog, you can add and remove components of your Windows operating system.

  3. In the Internet Tools window, scroll down to Personal Web Server. If it is checked, then it is already installed, and you can click Cancel. Otherwise, select the box next to Personal Web Server to display a checkmark, and click OK.

Now sit back and let Windows install Personal Web Server. Once it's installed, you need to set up the server. You'll begin by running the setup program, and answering a series of questions.

  4. Select Start > Run and type X:\add-ons\pws\setup.exe.

    NOTE

Replace X with the letter that identifies your CD-ROM drive.

A screen telling you that setup is initializing pops up on your monitor, and then a welcome screen appears. The screen lists some of the features of Microsoft's Personal Web Server, including the Web server, transaction server, and data access components. You will be using only the Web server feature to serve your ColdFusion pages.

  5. Click Next to display a list of configuration options, and click Typical.

The "typical" installation includes documentation that will be useful if you want to become a more advanced user. The documentation will also answer many of the simple questions you may have. Unless you are an advanced user , you should probably not choose the custom installation.

  6. Click Next. To accept the default directory for your WWW service, simply click Next again.

The default directory that is provided for your WWW service is C:\Inetpub\ wwwroot . Unless you want to have a document root on another hard drive, you should use the WWW service default directory.

    TIP

If you want to change the WWW service directory, type the name of your preferred directory in the WWW Service text field, or click the Browse button to select a directory.

The document root is the top of the directory structure from which your Web pages will be served . Any Web page that you want to access must be either in this folder or in another folder below the root.

    TIP

There is no limit on how deeply nested your folders can be. It is usually a good idea to divide your site into sections and give each section its own folder. For example, if your site has an About section, you might want to put the pages in that section in a folder called About.

After you select your document root and click Next, Personal Web Server completes the installation. A progress bar appears as the installation finishes.

  7. Click Finish.

You will be prompted to restart your computer once you click the Finish button. Personal Web Server is now completely installed and configured.
