Understanding Default Site Templates

Right out of the box, Windows SharePoint Services includes common site templates that can be used to create new sites. These templates include the most commonly requested site functionality for SharePoint and can be further customized after their creation. The types of site templates included in SharePoint are as follows:

  • Team Site The Team Site template is one of the most common templates used to create sites. This template includes standard site items such as a shared documents library and Announcements, Event, Contacts, and Quick Links lists. The template creates a site with two zones for Web Partsa larger left zone and a smaller right zone.

  • Blank Site The Blank Site template creates the same site structure as the Team Site template, but without the default content such as document libraries and lists. You can easily add your own content after the site is created. The zones created are the same as in the Team Site template.

  • Document Workspace A Document Workspace template creates a workspace, which is slightly different in concept from a site. This template creates a workspace that can be used when document creation and modification are the primary reasons for the creation of the workspace. It includes a document library and Links and Tasks lists for managing the document-creation process. This template is normally used by members of a top-level site who need a space to focus solely on document creation. The home page for the site includes three zonesa top, left, and right zone.

  • Basic Meeting Workspace Another workspace template, this one is used if you need a space within SharePoint to set up and manage a big meeting. It includes the type of content you would need to organize and track your meeting, such as Objectives, Attendees, Agenda lists, and a document library. This workspace looks and feels different from a regular siteit doesn't have a Quick Launch bar or a full top link bar, and it changes the way common tasks are done. For example, content is created and controlled through pages in the workspace. These pages can be created to display separate sets of content from the workspace using tabs. Zones are split into three columnsleft, right, and center.

  • Blank Meeting Workspace A Blank Meeting workspace is simply the Basic Meeting workspace, but without the predefined content. Administration is different than with a regular site because all actions are controlled from the link on the right of the workspace labeled Modify This Workspace. Use this tool to define user settings, create content, and manage page layout.

  • Decision Meeting Workspace A Decision Meeting workspace is essentially the same as the other meeting workspace templates, except that a few extra lists are created. The template includes a predefined document library and lists for objectives, attendees, agenda, tasks, and decisions. Zones are also split into three columns.

  • Social Meeting Workspace This type of workspace is useful when you are setting up an event or a social occasion for your site users. The workspace includes a default picture library for posting pictures of the event, as well as several lists, such as Attendees, Directions, Things to Bring, and Discussions. Zones are split into three columns, as with the other workspaces.

  • Multipage Meeting Workspace This workspace includes multiple pages that you can define based on the needs of your project. By default, it also includes Objectives, Attendees, and Agenda lists. The three column zones are present on this workspace as well.

During the site-creation process discussed previously, you had the option to choose one of these templates to use when creating your site. Because SharePoint is easily customizable, you'll find it straightforward enough to customize you site even further after it is created.
