Site Administrators are responsible for granting and denying access to a SharePoint site. Unlike with a standard file server, however, permissions to SharePoint information can only be controlled at two levels. The first level is the site level, where access to the site can be controlled by membership in site groups, such as Reader, Contributor, Web Designer, and Administrator. The second layer of administration is at the document library or list level, where Site Administrators can override the site-level permissions that a site group has. For example, in Figure 15.1, you can see that Carrie is a member of the Reader group and that Sophie is a member of the Contributor group for the site. Figure 15.1. Setting granular permissions within SharePoint sites.By default, this would normally mean that Carrie would be able to read all data in the SharePoint site. The Site Administrator however, set permissions at the document library level to only allow Contributors to be able to read information in that particular library. This is a useful concept, because it allows Site Administrators to grant Read access to certain sections of a SharePoint site, while restricting access to sensitive documents in the site. More information on configuring this type of security can be found in Lesson 16, "Managing Site, Library, and List Security." NOTE
