Lab 3.1: Creating a Forest Model and Schema Modification Plan

Lab Objectives

After completing this lab, you will be able to

  • Design a forest model
  • Design a schema modification plan

About This Lab

In this lab, you will analyze a portion of the existing environment at a medium-sized company to design its forest model and schema modification plan.

Before You Begin

Before you begin this lab, you must be able to

  • Analyze an organization's environment to design its forest model
  • Analyze an organization's environment to design its schema modification plan

Exercise 1: Designing a Forest Model

In this exercise, you will analyze the existing environment at a medium-sized company to create a forest model. Review the scenario, and then create the forest model.

Scenario

Your design team is planning the Active Directory infrastructure for LitWare, Inc., a publisher of books and online children's literature. LitWare, Inc., publishes online children's literature in French. Last year it acquired Lucerne Publishing, a major publisher of books in German. Because the businesses are so different and because multiple languages are involved, Lucerne Publishing has retained its IT management department and is run with a minimum of involvement from LitWare, Inc. LitWare, Inc., has no initiatives to change this arrangement. LitWare, Inc., has 10,000 employees in Paris; Lucerne Publishing has 3,000 employees in Berlin and 4,000 employees in Lucerne.

Exercise Questions

Answer the following questions to create a forest model.

  1. List the advantages of using a multiple forest model for LitWare, Inc.

  2. List the disadvantages of using a multiple forest model for LitWare, Inc.

  3. Would you use a single or a multiple forest model for Lit Ware, Inc.? Why?

Exercise 2: Designing a Schema Modification Plan

In this exercise, you will continue with the LitWare, Inc., scenario and analyze the existing environment to design a schema modification plan. Review the scenario, and then design the schema modification plan.

Scenario

While gathering information for the Active Directory infrastructure plan, your design team learns that the management of the distribution department at Lucerne Publishing would like to include the title of each book published and the book's ISBN in the directory. Currently, there are no schema attributes or classes that handle book titles and ISBNs, so the design team is considering initiating a schema modification. By placing the titles and ISBNs in the directory, managers in the distribution department hope to ready themselves for the installation of a new directory-enabled inventory application.

To plan a schema modification, the schema modification policy of LitWare, Inc., requires the team to do the following:

  • Submit schema modification requests to the schema modification approval committee at Lucerne Publishing. With the request are included a description of the modification; a justification for the modification; and an assessment of the modification's impact on existing objects, network traffic, and the process of creating new objects.
  • For new schema object class, specify the following: OIDs for the new class (obtained from the ISO Name Registration Authority), class type, the location of the class in the hierarchy.
  • Obtain approval to test the modification from the schema modification approval committee at Lucerne Publishing.

Exercise Questions

Complete each of the following questions about designing a schema modification plan.

  1. What items should be included in a schema modification plan for LitWare, Inc.?

  2. Should the design team design a schema modification plan? Why or why not?
