Managing NIC Bindings

Once the NIC is installed, it appears in the Network Connections folder, shown in Figure 9-1, as a Local Area Connection. You’ll also see any other connections that are currently configured on the computer, such as dial-up and broadband connections.

If you right-click the connection and select Properties, you can access the properties dialog box for the Local Area Connection. The main tab where you can configure items is the General tab, shown in Figure 9-2.

As you can see in Figure 9-2, you can click the Configure button to configure and troubleshoot the NIC itself. This feature simply opens Device Manager properties for the NIC. In the middle of the window, you see a list of services and protocols that are bound to the NIC. Common examples you might see here are Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks. These services and protocols are “bound” to the NIC, which means the NIC uses these protocols and services for communication on your network. However, depending on the needs of the network, you may need to bind other protocols and/or services as well. For example, let’s say that NetWare is in use in your network. In this case, you may need to add the NWLink protocol or Services for NetWare. In small networks, you might also need the NetBEUI protocol (although use of NetBEUI has been widely replaced by TCP/IP). If you do in fact need to add a service or protocol, you can easily do so. Just follow the steps in the next subsection.

Adding a Service or Protocol

  1. To add a protocol or service, click the Install button on the General tab.

  2. In the Select Network Component Type dialog box, shown here, choose Client, Service, or Protocol. In this example, I’m going to install a protocol. Click Add.

  3. In the Selection List that appears, select the client, service, or protocol that you want to install. If you have an installation disk for the client, service, or protocol, click the Have Disk button and follow the instructions that appear. Otherwise, click OK.

  4. The new client, service, or protocol is installed.

Note

You can also easily uninstall any client, service, or protocol by simply selecting it and clicking the Uninstall button.
