Using Any Moving Video as Your Matte Key

The track matte key effect works with just about any type of moving video clip you choose to use as your matte image. You can layer any three video clips (stills or moving video) and use the track matte key to generate an animated or traveling matte key effect.

To accomplish this technique, do the following:

  1. Edit the background video on Video Track 1.

  2. Edit a second clip of video on Video Track 2.

  3. Edit a third video clip that will act as your matte key on Video Track 3.

  4. Select the clip on Video Track 2 to highlight it.

  5. Click Setup next to Transparency in the Effect Controls window.

or

  1. Select Clip > Video Options. Select Transparency from the pop-up menu, or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl-G (Windows) or Command-G (Macintosh). The Transparency Settings window appears.

  2. Select Track Matte from the Key Type pull-down menu.

  3. Click OK.

note

Matte keys work best when there is a clear distinction in the image's contrast. To improve the video's keying capability in Video Track 3, apply filters to adjust the contrast and brightness as well as turn it to grayscale.

The result you get should show you the image that is in Video Track 2 with the white (or brighter) portions of the video in Video Track 3 (that shape). The areas that were black (or darker portions of the video) in Video Track 3 should hold the shape while displaying those portions of the video clip found in Video Track 1.
