Troubleshooting

Classic Is Launched When Installing Camera Software

When I install my camera's software, the Classic environment is launched.

This happens if the software that is provided with your camera has not been Carbonized or provided as Cocoa software. The solution to this problem is to check the manufacturer's Web site for updates to the camera's software. Download and install the updated software as soon as you find it.

NOTE

If you don't find Mac OS X software for your camera, make sure that you send e-mail or leave comments with the manufacturer so that it knows you need Mac OS X software for their product. The only way manufacturers will update their software is if they believe that customer demand requires it.

Until Mac OS X compatible software is available, to download images from your camera, you will have to boot in Mac OS 9 and run the Mac OS 9 software for your camera. (If your Mac was produced after January 2003, this won't be an option for you.)

If your camera supports the PTP, you can use Image Capture or iPhoto to download images from it instead of using its own software.

The Digital Camera Is Not Recognized by Image Capture or iPhoto

When I connect a digital camera to my Mac, neither Image Capture nor iPhoto recognizes the camera, so I can't download images.

This situation occurs when Mac OS X does not support the camera you are using, most likely because your camera does not use PTP. In this case, there are two options to try:

  • Obtain Mac OS X compatible software for your camera and use that to download images If your camera does not support PTP, you will have to use its own software to download images.

  • If you can, start up in Mac OS 9 and use the camera's Mac OS 9 software to download images Assuming your camera does offer Mac-compatible software, you can always restart under Mac OS 9 and use that version of the software to download images from the camera. Periodically check the manufacturer's Web site to see whether Mac OS X software is available.

In some rare cases, there might be a cable or hardware problem. Use the Apple System Profiler to make sure that your Mac is able to communicate with the camera.

To learn how to use the Apple System Profiler, see "Using the Apple System Profiler to Create a System Profile," p. 814.

The Camera Is Not Mounted on the Desktop

When I connect my camera, I can't access it because it is not mounted on the desktop.

This happens if the driver for your camera is not Mac OS X compatible. You will need a Mac OS X driver for the camera. You should periodically check the manufacturer's Web site for updates eventually, the manufacturer of your camera is likely to release Mac OS X drivers for it.

Until Mac OS X compatible software is available, to download images from your camera you will have to boot in Mac OS 9 and install the Mac OS 9 drivers for your camera. When you connect the camera to your Mac, it should be mounted on the desktop.

Classic Is Launched When Installing Scanner Software

When I install my scanner software, the Classic environment is launched.

This happens if the software that is provided with your scanner has not been Carbonized or provided as Cocoa software. The solution to this problem is to check the manufacturer's Web site for updates to the scanner's software. Download and install the updated software as soon as you find it.

NOTE

If you don't find Mac OS X software for your scanner, make sure that you send e-mail or leave comments with the manufacturer so that it knows you need Mac OS X software for their product. The only way manufacturers will update their software is if they believe that customer demand requires it.
