Configuring the Equalizer Manually

To configure the Equalizer manually, perform the following steps:

1.

Select some music, such as a playlist, and play it.

Tip

If you make an adjustment to any of the sliders, the Equalizer will switch to the Manual mode automatically.

2.

Open the Equalizer.

3.

Check the On check box, if it isn't checked already. This makes the Equalizer active.

4.

Choose Manual on the Presets slider. This puts the Equalizer in the Manual mode.

5.

If you want to change the relative volume of all the songs you are playing, drag the Preamp slider up to make the music louder or down to make the music quieter.

6.

Set each of the frequency sliders to change the relative volume of that frequency. Drag a slider up to make its frequency louder or down to make it quieter. For example, to make music more bassy, drag the sliders for the lower end of the frequency scale up. This will increase the volume of lower sounds and make the bass components of music more prominent. Adjust the other sliders to change the relative volumes of their frequencies until the music sounds "better" to you (see Figure 17.2).

Figure 17.2. It's all relative; this classic equalizer pattern enhances both the bass and treble components of music.

7.

When you are done making changes, you can click in the iTunes window to make it active or close the Equalizer to get it out of the way (it continues to work even if you can't see it).
