Chapter 2. Getting Started with an iPod

In This Chapter

  • Find out what good stuff came with your iPod.

  • Charge the iPod's battery.

  • Install the iPod's software on your computer.

  • Connect the iPod to your computer and transfer music from your computer to it.

  • Use a Dock to connect an iPod to your computer.

Getting started with an iPod involves the following general steps:

1.

Understand what is included with your iPod.

2.

Charge the iPod's battery.

3.

Install the iPod's software on your computer.

4.

Connect the iPod to your computer and transfer music from your iTunes Library to the iPod.

5.

Disconnect the iPod from your computer.

After you have performed these steps, you will be ready to learn how to use the iPod, which you'll start doing in the next chapter.

As you learned in the last chapter, there are three basic models of iPod. Considering iPods work with both Windows and Macintosh computers and how many models and variations of those there are, covering all possible combinations of iPod and computer just isn't possible. So, what I have done instead is to provide general guidelines to help you accomplish the basic tasks you need to do to get your iPod rolling (and rocking). You probably won't need to read every section in this chapter unless you use several kinds of iPods on both types of computers. Use the headings to determine which circumstances apply to you, and skip those sections that don't apply.

tip

As you are handling the iPod, it will turn on if you press any control. For now, turn it off again by pressing and the holding down the Play/Pause button until the iPod shuts off again. If you have a shuffle, ignore this because it doesn't apply.
