Goals

Setting goals is definitely important, and you can measure progress against them by product release cycles and penetration of your product in the marketplace. This is important because without measurements toward goals, it's all practice.

The challenge in many places is that people have always had calendar cycles - quarterly or yearly planning. Technology doesn't move according to those cycles. You have to set up goals that match your fiscal calendar, but then you have to be willing to change the goals if the ground rules change, or the marketplace or economy has changed. If you're smart, you'll recognize when an external occurrence has changed and invalidated the plans you have made. Then you set up new goals.

Be aware of the external factors you counted on, and as soon as they change, reexamine your premises. Prepare a new set of goals. Don't just march down the same path. Make new plans and new MBOs when it's appropriate.
