Chapter 15: The Art of Being a CTO - Fostering Change

Overview

Rick Bergquist

The responsibilities of the CTO vary widely from company to company because of the varying needs of each organization. At PeopleSoft, the role is for an individual who understands technology and how it can be applied for business solutions, and then sees that it gets applied or convinces people that the company has to change to use the new technology going forward. It requires an understanding of technology, an understanding of what is possible, and an understanding of the business, because, at the end of the day, we're driving forward to make businesses successful and to fit into that whole strategy.

My job is to consume vast amounts of data and distill it down to manageable amounts. It's a job for which there are no shortcuts. You're always looking for that one nugget of information to give you insight into a new way of doing things.
