Updating Your Table of Contents

3 4

One of the new features in Word 2002 is the ability to update a table of contents easily. With the click of a button right on the Outlining toolbar, you can update a table of contents you've already generated. This allows you to record any changes you've made while outlining, whether you've moved headings around, changed word choice, or deleted headings altogether.

Tip - Create your TOC

You must have created a table of contents previously before you attempt using the Update TOC button or Word will display a message that there's no TOC to update. You create a table of contents by placing the insertion point where you want to add it and then choosing Insert, Reference, Index And Tables. When the Index And Tables dialog box appears, click the Table Of Contents tab. Make any necessary changes and click OK to generate the TOC.

To update your table of contents from Outline view, simply click Update TOC. Word goes through your document, checking the headings as they now stand, and modifying the TOC in your document.

To find out more about creating a table of contents for your documents, see Chapter 26, "Generating First-Class Tables of Contents and Related Elements."

If you want to move to the TOC to take a look for yourself, simply click Go To TOC on the Outlining toolbar. Word moves to the place in your document you've placed the table of contents (see Figure 11-11).
