Chapter 24 -- Drawing Attention to Your Document with Borders and Shading

Chapter 24

Sometimes producing a simple document on a clean white page is the best approach for communicating your message as clearly as possible. But there are those times when you want to wow your audience, when you're looking for ways to enhance the look, spark up the design, and show your readers you really know what you're doing. When you're looking for more than a simple text-on-paper appeal, you can use borders and shading to create effective, eye-catching document designs.

How will you use borders in your publication? Here are a few ideas, but you'll no doubt have many more of your own:

  • Create a border around a table that's placed in text.
  • Set your headline as white text in a dark blue box.
  • Showcase a special section of text that goes along with a primary article.
  • Set off your table of contents so that readers can see it easily.

Tip - Make custom border choices

The borders you create don't have to go all the way around an item. You can use rules to border only the top or bottom, or sides, of an object. For more information on using rules to enhance an object, see the section "Inserting a Horizontal Line" later in this chapter.
