Charting and Diagramming for Clarity

3 4

Organization charts and diagrams can add clarity to documents in which you need to show relationships—whether those relationships are between the workers in a company or the stages of a project. You might use organization charts to

  • Show all employees and their reports in a specific department
  • Illustrate the role each person plays in a particular project

Diagrams are helpful in illustrating not people relationships as much as relationships between parts of a project, steps toward a goal, or the process of building toward a desired end. For example, you might use diagrams to

  • Show how the responsibilities of departments overlap
  • Identify the steps needed to resolve the current inventory problem
  • Show all the reasons to produce a new product
  • Illustrate the foundation of a new business and the incremental steps involved in bringing ideas to market

You use two different procedures to add organization charts and diagrams. The next section shows you how to insert, edit, and enhance organization charts.
