Understanding Multilanguage Support

 < Day Day Up >

The multilanguage support in Word comes to you courtesy of the Microsoft Office 2003 Multilingual User Interface (MUI) Pack. You'll find the MUI Pack on its own CD in your Microsoft Office System package; the Pack has its own installation utility that you can use to set up the languages for use with Word. (If you're working in a corporate setting, see your system administrator to obtain the Office 2003 MUI Pack.) After you install the MUI Pack, you'll be able to use the following features:

  • Automatic language detection Word automatically detects up to 80 languages and uses the correct dictionaries, punctuation rules, and sorting conventions for each language.

  • Font support All Office programs link to a second font if the primary font is missing characters that are specific to the language.

  • Date, time, and number formats Word creates the date, time, and number formats applicable to each language.

  • Right-to-left editing If you're working in a language that is written right to left, you can edit Word documents in that way.

    Note

Word uses Unicode text for multilanguage documents. Unicode is a standard way of storing text characters that provides for more than one byte for each character, enabling you to use a single character set to represent all languages.
