Applying a Page Border

 < Day Day Up >

Many of the techniques you use to add a border to a section, table, or object in a document can be used to add borders to entire pages as well. Figure 18-5 shows a document with a page border. You can create standard page borders or use Art Border, as described in this part of the chapter.

Creating a Page Border

When you add a page border, you start the process by choosing Format, Borders And Shading. When the Borders And Shading dialog box appears, click the Page Border tab. The main visual difference between the Borders tab and the Page Border tab is the addition of the Art list (which is covered in the next section of this chapter). In the Page Border tab, after you make all your border choices, the border will be applied to an entire page, section, or document. Here's the process:

  1. Click in a page or a section that will have a border.

  2. Choose Format, Borders And Shading, and then click the Page Border tab.

  3. Click a page border setting (Box, Shadow, 3-D, or Custom).

  4. Select a line style from the Style list.

  5. Select a color in the Color list, if desired.

  6. Click the Width arrow, and then choose the line width you want. The Style, Color, and Width settings are reflected in the Preview area.

  7. If desired, use the Preview image to select which edges of the page will have a page border.

  8. In the Apply To list, specify where the border should apply. Available options are Whole Document, This Section, This Section-First Page Only, and This Section-All Except First Page. By default, Whole Document is selected in the Apply To list, and the border is added to all the pages in the current document.

    Tip

To apply a page border to a single page (other than the first page) or to a few pages in a long document, you first have to set off the page or pages by creating a section. To learn more about creating and working with sections, see Chapter 19, "Formatting Columns and Sections for Advanced Text Control."

  9. Click OK to close the dialog box and apply the page border settings to the current document.

    Tip

Skip the first page border or apply a page border to the first page only  When you add a page border, Word applies the border to all the pages in your document. What if you want to skip the border on the first page or apply the border only to the first page? You can easily employ these options by using the Apply To setting in the Page Border tab in the Borders And Shading dialog box. To suppress the display of the border for first pages, choose Format, Borders And Shading, click the Page Border tab, click the Apply To arrow, and then select This Section - All Except First Page. To apply the border to the first page only, choose This Section - First Page Only in the Apply To list in the Page Border tab.

Adding an Artistic Border

The Art Page Border feature, known in earlier versions of Office as BorderArt, enables you to add an artistic touch to entire pages in your document. Special graphics are placed in patterns-either in black and white or in color-and used as borders for a page, group of pages, or selected sides of pages. To apply an artistic page border, follow these steps:

  1. Click in the document to which you want to add the border.

  2. Choose Format, Borders And Shading, and then click the Page Border tab.

  3. Click the Art arrow, and then scroll through the art borders. Select an Art option. The Preview section shows your change, as shown in Figure 18-6. To control which borders will contain graphics, you can click the borders in the Preview Page area to add and remove the images.

Figure 18-6: You can select from a number of art borders provided in Word. The first time you use the Art page border feature, you might need to install the feature (which entails following instructions on the screen and possibly inserting your Office CD).

  4. In the Apply To list, choose which pages should include the border. You can include the border on the Whole Document, This Section, This Section - First Page Only, or This Section - All Except First Page.

  5. Click OK. The border is added to the document according to the settings you configured in the Borders And Shading dialog box.

    Caution

Artistic borders can be colorful and vibrant-but they can also be a bit much for some professional documents. For that reason, you should use art borders sparingly and use discretion on a case-by-case basis.
