Wizards: Create a Layout Once

Wizards: Create a Layout Once; Use It a Million Times

Wizards can automate letters and presentations, install fonts from the Web, and more. Select File > Wizards to see a list of available wizards.

We will use the Letter Wizard as an example. Go to File > Wizards > Letter. Along with the wizard, you see a preview of the letter.

OpenOffice.org wizards.

In step 1 you select the page design (business, formal, or personal letter). When you make changes, the preview updates automatically. If you select Business Letter, you can also have a letterhead. You configure it in step 2. If you don't want a letterhead, step 2 is unavailable.

Step 1: Page design.

Step 2: Letterhead layout.

In step 3 (not shown), you choose whether you want a logo, footer, and other visual items. You don't actually select the logo here. That is done in step 6. Here you simply decide whether to have one. Next, in step 4, you set the address of the sender and recipient.

Step 4: Recipient and sender address.

In step 5, you enter the footer. Note that if you want page numbers, you must have a footer. You can type anything in the footer. For example, some organizations put their return address information in the footer, not in the sender block.

Step 5: Footer. To have a page number, you must have a footer.

In the last step, you can optionally name the template. In this example I call it "letter." When you are done, click Finish.

OpenOffice.org remembers the settings you choose, so next the time you run the wizard, you won't have to design the letter from scratch.

The last step.

Often you will want to make edits beyond what's provided by the wizard (for example, changing the logo). To do this, click "Make manual changes to this letter template" in step 6 of the Letter Wizard dialog box, and then click OK. You can edit the template manually. When you're finished, select File > Save.
