The Bottom Line

Configuring Windows XP for any type of Internet connection is much, much easier than it used to be. Gone forever are the days where you have to manually install and configure the TCP/IP protocol stack and, boy, am I glad! Hooking up to the Internet shouldn't be a major production. In my opinion, Windows XP does it right. Just remember these key points:

  • If you already have an account with an ISP, you can use the New Connection Wizard to create a new connection with your existing settings; make sure you have all the necessary information from your ISP before you get started.

  • If you want a faster Internet connection, dump your dial-up and go with a broadband connection, via DSL or a cable modem.

  • If you have a high-speed Internet connection, you can share it with all the computers in your home via Internet Connection Sharing, which you set up via Windows XP's Network Setup Wizard.

  • Sharing a wireless connection is even easier, as Windows XP automatically seeks out all available Wi-Fi networks within range.
