Updating Device Drivers

The most appropriate drivers for your hardware are installed when Windows XP is first installed, or when you install a new peripheral. You can upgrade your drivers at any time, however if new drivers are available. (Manufacturers constantly update their drivers, typically to fix bugs or incompatibilities.)

To upgrade a specific device driver:

1.

From the Control Panel, click the System icon.

2.

When the System Properties utility opens, select the Hardware tab and then click the Device Manager button.

3.

When the Device Manager utility opens, select View, Devices by Type, and then navigate to the device you want to update.

4.

Double-click the device's icon to open the Properties dialog box.

5.

When the Properties dialog box appears, click the Driver tab, and then click the Update Driver button.

6.

When the Hardware Update Wizard appears (as shown in Figure 6.3), check the Install the Software Automatically option and click the Next button.

Figure 6.3. Use the Hardware Update Wizard to find and install updated device drivers.

7.

Follow the onscreen instructions to find and install the updated driver. If you have the latest version of the driver already installed, the wizard will tell you this.
