Chapter 15: Sample Office 2003 Multilingual Deployments

Download CD Content

There are a variety of ways to deploy Microsoft Office 2003 in a multilingual environment. This chapter describes several deployment scenarios, with step-by-step examples of how to customize and install Office in those situations. If your organization’s deployment needs do not follow one of these examples exactly, you can often adapt aspects of these examples to help you customize your own multilingual deployment.

Deploy Office with One MUI Pack

The multilingual needs of your users might only require you to install one Microsoft Office 2003 Multilingual User Interface Pack on their computers. Customizing and deploying Office 2003 with one MUI Pack is a straightforward process:

  • Install Office on an administrative installation point.

  • Specify the customized language settings for your users (as well as any other Office configurations) in a transform.

  • Chain the MUI Pack to the Office installation in the Setup.ini file.

Note

For more information about creating an administrative installation point for Office, see “Creating an Administrative Installation Point” in Chapter 3, “Preparing to Deploy Office 2003.”

After you create an administrative installation point for Office, add the MUI Pack file that you plan to deploy. The following example shows how to add the Japanese MUI Pack, but the process can be applied to any MUI Pack you need to deploy.

To add the Japanese MUI Pack to an administrative installation point

  1. Insert the CD that contains the Japanese MUI Pack.

  2. On the Start menu, click Run, and then click Browse to locate the MUI Pack CD.

  3. On the MUI Pack CD, select Muisetup.exe and click Open.

  4. On the command line, following Muisetup.exe, type /a and click OK.

  5. When prompted by Muisetup.exe, accept the end-user license agreement (EULA) and click Next.

  6. Enter the server and the share for your Office administrative installation point and click Next.

    Or, if you have decided to store your MUI Pack administrative images in a different location, enter that location here.

    A share must be large enough to store the resources for the language that you need in addition to the Office 2003 files. Hard disk space requirements for the MUI Packs vary per MUI Pack language. For example, the German MUI Pack requires 231 megabytes (MB) of hard disk space. In addition, if users install from a compressed image and choose to keep the local installation source, the German MUI Pack requires an additional 91 MB of hard disk space for the local installation source. By contrast, the Chinese (Simplified) MUI Pack requires 578 MB of hard disk space plus an additional 320 MB for the local installation source.

  7. On the Available Languages page, choose Japanese.

Note

Languages that are not available on the current CD will appear dimmed on this page. You can add languages from other CDs to the same administrative installation point by running Muisetup.exe /a with additional MUI Pack CDs and specifying the same network server location.

You can include language feature customizations for the MUI Pack in your Office transform. The following example shows how you would set the installation language to Japanese, but this process can be applied to the other languages, as well.

To create an Office transform with language settings for Japanese

  1. Start the Custom Installation Wizard.

  2. On the Open MSI File page, enter (or browse to) the MSI file name for your Office installation (for example, Pro11.msi) from the administrative installation point for Office:

    \\server1\share\office\Pro11.msi

  3. On the Select the MST File to Save page, enter the name of the Japanese MST file you are creating; for example:

    \\server1\share\office\OfficeWithJapanese.mst

  4. On the Set Feature Installation States page, click on the Microsoft Office node (plus (+) sign), click on the Office Shared Features node, and then click on the International Support node.

  5. Click on Japanese fonts and select an installation state (only if the computer you are installing Office on is not running the Japanese version of Microsoft Windows ).

  6. On the Change Office User Settings page, click Microsoft Office 2003 (User).

  7. Navigate the tree under Language Settings to Enabled Languages.

  8. Double-click Installed version of Microsoft Office to open the Properties page for this setting.

  9. Click Apply changes, then select Japanese from the Installed version of Microsoft Office drop-down menu.

  10. Click OK.

Now you chain the Japanese MUI Pack to your Office installation. As shown by the following example, to chain packages, you customize the Office Setup.ini to include the MSI packages you want to install.

Note

For detailed information about chaining packages with Office, see “Deploying Office and Other Products Together” in Chapter 5, “Installing Office 2003.”

To chain the Japanese MUI Pack with your Office deployment

  1. Open the Office Setup settings file (Setup.ini) in a text editor, such as Notepad.

  2. Create a section called [ChainedInstall_1], and in this section specify the name and path of the Japanese MUI Pack. For example:

    PATH=\\server1\share\office\1041\Mui.msi

  3. Specify the task type for this section:

    TASKTYPE=msi

  4. Specify other options for this section, such as IgnoreReturnValue or Reboot.

  5. Specify a unique display setting or MUI Pack transform to apply to the MUI Pack installation by setting the Display or MST property.

    For example, you can ensure that the MUI Pack installation installs quietly with the following setting:

    DISPLAY=None

  6. Specify additional options by using the Cmdline property.

    For example, set the NOFEATURESTATEMIGRATION property to True to cancel the custom action that matches installation states for MUI Pack feature states to corresponding Office feature installation states:

    CMDLINE=NOFEATURESTATEMIGRATION=TRUE

    The completed section in the Setup.ini file looks like this:

    [ChainedInstall_1] PATH=\\server1\share\office\1041\Mui.msi TASKTYPE=msi DISPLAY=None CMDLINE=NOFEATURESTATEMIGRATION=True

After completing the above procedures, you can provide users with a command line to install Office with the Japanese MUI Pack:

\\server1\share\office\setup.exe /qb  RANSFORMS=\\server1\share\office\OfficeWithJapanese.mst
