Installing Localized Versions of Office 2003

Localized versions of Microsoft Office 2003 are available for users who want all Office features in their own language. Although deploying Office with the Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI Pack) gives you the advantage of having a single installation of Office for your entire international organization, there are limitations to some plug-in language features in the MUI Pack. As a result, these features are offered only in localized versions.

Although MUI Packs work only with the English version of Office 2003 and not with localized versions, users of a localized version of Office can easily share documents created by users running Office with a MUI Pack. In this way, localized versions of Office 2003 are compatible with Office 2003 with MUI Packs.

To install a localized version of Office 2003, you follow the same procedure as installing any other Office 2003 package (MSI file). For example, you can customize your installation by creating a transform with the Custom Installation Wizard.

On the Resource Kit CD

The Office Resource Kit tools, which include the Custom Installation Wizard, are contained in a self-extracting executable file (Ork.exe) that can be downloaded from the Office Resource Kit Toolbox at http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2003. The tools are available only in English.

Although the deployment process is the same for localized versions of Office as for other Office 2003 products, there are certain deployment settings you should be aware of when deploying the new language version of Office for Hindi. These settings can help users have a better experience when using Hindi Office.

First, when you install the Hindi localized version of Office 2003, you should set the user locale to one of the Indic languages—such as Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Konkani, Marathi, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Tamil, or Telugu. Setting the user locale to an Indic language will ensure that the language settings for Office (for example, the installation language) are set appropriately for Hindi users.

Second, when working in Hindi Office, Window title bars may display with very small fonts. The small fonts also appear in Setup dialogs when users install Hindi Office from a stand-alone CD. To have a better reading experience, users can change the font size and format in Windows.

To change the font size and format to make Hindi dialogs more readable

  1. In Windows XP, on Control Panel, click Appearance and Themes, then click Display. In Windows 2000, on Control Panel (or in Classic View in Control Panel in Windows XP), click Display.

  2. On the Appearance tab, click Advanced.

  3. In the Advanced Appearance dialog, in the Item drop-down list, choose Active Title Bar.

This lets you change format settings for the Active Window title bar.

  4. In the Size drop-down box next to the Font drop-down box, choose 11.

    or

Keep the same font size but click the Bold (B) button to change the font from Bold to regular text.

    or

Change the font size to 11 and change the font from Bold to regular text.

  5. Click OK twice to save the settings.
