Installing Proofing Tools

Microsoft Office 2003 Proofing Tools includes spelling and grammar checkers, thesauruses, AutoCorrect lists, Hyphenator, and other editing tools that help users create and edit Office documents in more than 50 languages. Proofing tools for all languages are included on a single CD, but you can install the tools for only the languages that users need.

Proofing tools are also included in the Microsoft Office 2003 Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI Pack). The same proofing tools that come with localized versions of Office 2003 are included in the corresponding MUI Pack for each language.

Hard disk space requirements for Office 2003 Proofing Tools vary by language. For instance, Proofing Tools for German requires 48 MB of hard disk space; Proofing Tools for Chinese (Simplified) requires 365 MB. Asian languages require as much as 120 MB of hard disk space to include the necessary fonts and Input Method Editors (IMEs).

Whether you install tools from the Proofing Tools CD or from a MUI Pack, you can choose to install proofing tools with, or separately from, a deployment of Office. As part of your installation, you can customize which tools to install by creating a transform using the Custom Installation Wizard.

Customizing a proofing tools installation

You may want to omit a language feature from a proofing tools installation or make other customizations when you install proofing tools with Office. Using the Custom Installation Wizard to create a transform (MST file), you can customize an installation that includes settings for the language features you want users to install. Users will receive these customizations when they install proofing tools using this transform.

Using a transform, you can omit a language feature from the installation by setting the feature to Not Available, Hidden, Locked on the Set Feature Installation States page of the wizard. Users cannot change the installation state of a feature marked as Not Available, Hidden, Locked during Setup, nor can they add or remove the feature later by using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

On the Resource Kit CD

The Microsoft Office 2003 Editions Resource Kit includes the Custom Installation Wizard, which is installed by default when you run the Office Resource Kit Setup program. For more information about using the Custom Installation Wizard, see the Custom Installation Wizard Help on the companion CD. To install the tool, see “Custom Installation Wizard,” also on the companion CD.

You can customize an Office 2003 Proofing Tools installation, or you can customize a MUI Pack transform to install the proofing tools you need.

To create a transform to customize an Office 2003 Proofing Tools installation

  1. Start the Custom Installation Wizard.

  2. When prompted for an MSI file, enter (or browse to) the Ptk.msi file from the administrative installation point, if you are installing tools from Office 2003 Proofing Tools.

  3. On the Set Feature Installation States page, select the languages you want to install and set the appropriate installation states.

    Tip

To install only a few languages, set the installation state of the entire Microsoft Office 2003 Proofing Tools feature in the transform to Not Available. Then expand the feature tree, select the languages you want, and set them to another installation state.

If Office is already installed, the installation states for proofing tools that you install will match the installation states of the Office installation (unless you specify the NOFEATURESTATEMIGRATION property).

If you are installing proofing tools from a MUI Pack, customize your installation using the steps that follow.

To create a transform to customize an installation of proofing tools from a MUI Pack

  1. Start the Custom Installation Wizard.

  2. When prompted for an MSI file, enter (or browse to) the MSI file for the MUI Pack from which you are installing proofing tools. For example, if you are installing from the Japanese MUI Pack, you browse to:

    \\server1\share\office\1041\Mui.msi

  3. On the Select Feature Installation States page, click on the Microsoft Office drop-down arrow and select Not Available for all features.

(You can alternately specify Not Available, Hidden, Locked.)

  4. Click on the Office Shared Features node (plus (+) sign), then click on the Proofing Tools node.

  5. Click on the drop-down arrows to set the appropriate installation state for the language features you want to install (for example, Run from My Computer).

For your customizations to be applied when users run Setup from the administrative installation point, Setup must be instructed to use your custom transform. You can use the TRANSFORMS= command-line option to specify this transform, or you can specify the transform in Setup.ini.

For example, users might use the following command line to install proofing tools from Office 2003 Proofing Tools:

\\server1\Proof\ptksetup.exe /q TRANSFORMS=\\server1\Proof\Proof.mst

Or you could add the following entry to your Setup.ini file:

[MST1] MST1=Proof.mst

Installing proofing tools from Office 2003 Proofing Tools

The Office 2003 Proofing Tools CD provides a single resource from which you can install any of the proofing tools. You can install proofing tools on a local computer or deploy tools to a group of users.

When you deploy to a large group of users, you can install proofing tools separately from Office or together with Office. When you install proofing tools separately from Office, you can customize and install the tools for one user or all users in your organization.

For example, you may want to customize a proofing tools installation to omit a language feature. When you customize for all users at once, you can deploy proofing tools customized in a standard way for everyone. This simplifies your deployment and helps you to control the deployment process.

Creating an administration installation point for Office 2003 Proofing Tools

Whether you choose to install proofing tools from the Office 2003 Proofing Tools CD during an Office deployment or allow users to run Ptksetup.exe themselves, you first install the tools on an administrative installation point. When you install the tools on the administrative installation point, you can choose which languages to make available to your users. The administrative installation point serves as a location from which the tools are installed.

To install Office 2003 Proofing Tools on an administrative installation point

  1. On a server, run Ptksetup.exe with the /a command-line option from the Office 2003 Proofing Tools CD.

  2. When prompted, enter the installation location and product key, and then click Next.

  3. Accept the end-user license agreement (EULA), and then click Next.

  4. Click Install.

This loads proofing tools files to the location you have specified as the administrative installation point, from which users can install the tools.

Installing Office 2003 Proofing Tools on a computer

If you have one or two users who need proofing tools, you can install proofing tools from the Proofing Tools CD to individual computers.

To install Office 2003 Proofing Tools on a single computer

  1. On the Office 2003 Proofing Tools CD, run Ptksetup.exe.

  2. When prompted, enter the product key, and then click Next.

  3. Enter the user name, initials, and organization, and then click Next.

  4. Accept the end-user license agreement (EULA), and then click Next.

  5. On the Type of Installation page, choose Custom Install.

  6. On the Advanced Customization page, click the node (plus (+) sign) for the languages you want to install and use the drop-down arrows to set the appropriate installation states.

  7. Click Install.

Installing Office 2003 Proofing Tools with an installation of Office

If you deploy tools from Office 2003 Proofing Tools at the same time that you deploy Office 2003, you can chain the installation of Proofing Tools so it is installed on a user’s computer during the same operation.

To chain Proofing Tools to an Office installation, you customize the Office Setup.ini file to include the MSI packages you want to install.

Note

For more information about the many options available to you when creating chained install sections in Setup settings files, see “Deploying Office and Other Products Together” in Chapter 5, “Installing Office 2003.”

To chain Proofing Tools with your Office deployment

  1. Open the Office Setup settings file (Setup.ini) in a text editor such as Notepad.

  2. Create a new section called [ChainedInstall_1].

  3. In the [ChainedInstall_1] section, specify the name and path of the Office 2003 Proofing Tools MSI file. For example:

    PATH=\\server1\share\office\ptk.msi

  4. Add the following entry to the [ChainedInstall_1] section:

    TaskType=msi

  5. Specify other options in this section, such as IgnoreReturnValue or Reboot.

  6. Specify a unique display setting or transform to apply to the Proofing Tools installation by setting the Display or MST property in the [ChainedInstall_1] section.

For example, you can ensure that the Proofing Tools installation installs quietly with the following setting:

DISPLAY=None

Using the settings in the above procedure, the completed section looks like this:

[ChainedInstall_1] PATH=\\server1\share\office\ptk.msi DISPLAY=None TRANSFORMS=\\server1\share\office\Proof.mst TASKTYPE=msi IGNORERETURNVALUE=0 REBOOT=0

This example assumes that your proofing tools files are in the same folder as your Office files on an administrative installation point.

Tip

If your proofing tools are located in the same folder as your Office administrative installation point, you can specify all paths as relative paths instead of as absolute paths (as in the above example). Using a relative path will allow you to copy the files to new servers later, if necessary, without updating the INI file to use the new server name. If your proofing tools files are located in a different folder (and possibly on a different server) than your Office administrative files, you should specify paths as absolute paths (for example, \\server1\proof\ptk.msi).

Now users can install Office and proofing tools together by running Office Setup.

Note

This chaining technique does not work when deploying by using Group Policy software installation.

Installing Office 2003 Proofing Tools separately from an Office installation

You can install Proofing Tools separately from an Office installation. One way to do this is to have users install the tools for themselves from the administrative installation point, or from a command line that you distribute to them in a batch file, an e-mail message, or some other means used by your organization. In either installation, you can use a transform that applies customizations when Proofing Tools Setup.exe is run. For example, the Setup command line might look like this:

\\server1\share\proof\Ptksetup.exe /qb TRANSFORMS=Proof.mst

Installing proofing tools from a MUI Pack

You may already have MUI Packs available that include the proofing tools your organization needs. In this scenario, you do not need to purchase the Proofing Tools CD. You can customize a MUI Pack deployment to install the proofing tools you need along with any other language resources from the MUI Pack.

If just a few users need proofing tools for a language, you can install proofing tools from a MUI Pack CD on their local computers. When you deploy to a large group of users, you can install proofing tools from a MUI Pack together with your Office deployment, or the tools can be installed separately from an Office installation.

Creating an administration installation point for proofing tools from a MUI Pack

Whether you choose to install proofing tools from a MUI Pack together with an Office installation or separately, you first install the proofing tools you want to make available to your users on an administrative installation point. Users can run Muisetup.exe from this location and choose languages they wish to install on their computers.

To install proofing tools from a MUI Pack on an administrative installation point

  1. On a server, run Muisetup.exe with the /a command-line option on the Office 2003 MUI Pack CD that includes proofing tools for the languages you want.

  2. Enter the installation location and product key, and then click Next.

  3. Accept the end-user license agreement (EULA), and then click Next.

  4. On the Select Feature Installation States page, select the proofing tools you want users to be able to install and set the appropriate installation states.

  5. Click Install.

Users can run Muisetup.exe at this location to install the proofing tools they need, or you can customize a deployment of Office to include proofing tools from this folder.

Installing proofing tools from a MUI Pack on an individual computer

If you have one or two users who need proofing tools, you can install proofing tools from a MUI Pack to individual computers.

To install proofing tools from a MUI Pack on a single computer

  1. On the Office 2003 MUI Pack CD, navigate to the folder for one language, identified by an LCID. For example, the LCID for German is 1031.

  2. In that language folder, run Setup.exe.

  3. Accept the end-user license agreement (EULA), and then click Next.

  4. On the Type of Installation page, choose Proofing Tools Only.

  5. Click Install.

Installing proofing tools from a MUI Pack with an installation of Office

If you deploy proofing tools from an Office 2003 MUI Pack at the same time that you deploy Office 2003, you can chain the installations together so that they are installed on a user’s computer during the same operation.

To do this, you customize the Office Setup settings file (Setup.ini) to include the MSI package for the Office 2003 MUI Pack. The following example assumes that you have customized a MUI Pack transform called German.MST that selects the German proofing tools and contains any other customizations you need for the MUI Pack.

To include proofing tools from a MUI Pack in your Office installation

  1. Open the Office Setup settings file (Setup.ini) in a text editor such as Notepad.

  2. Create a new section called [ChainedInstall_1].

  3. In the [ChainedInstall_1] section, specify the name and path of the MUI Pack MSI file. For example:

    PATH=\\server1\share\office\1031\Mui.msi

  4. Add the following entry to the [ChainedInstall_1] section:

TASKTYPE=msi

  1. Specify other options in this section, such as IgnoreReturnValue or Reboot.

  2. Specify a unique display setting or transform to apply to the proofing tools installation by setting the Display or MST property in the [ChainedInstall_1] section. For example:

    MST=\\server1\share\office\1031\German.MST

Using the above examples, the completed section in the Setup.ini file looks like this:

[ChainedInstall_1] PATH=\\server1\share\office\1031\Mui.msi MST=\\server1\share\office\1031\German.MST TASKTYPE=msi
Note

If your MUI Pack files and folders are located in the same folder as your Office administrative installation point, you can specify all paths as relative paths instead of as absolute paths (as in the above example). Using a relative path will allow you to copy the files to new servers later, if necessary, without updating the INI file to use the new server name. If your MUI Pack files are located in a different folder (and possibly on a different server) than your Office administrative files, you should specify paths as absolute paths (for example, \\server1\muipacks\mui.msi).

Now users can install Office and proofing tools from a MUI Pack together by running Office Setup.

Note

This chaining technique does not work when deploying by using Group Policy software installation. For information on deploying Office with Group Policy, see “Using Group Policy to Deploy Office” in Chapter 5, “Installing Office 2003.”

Installing proofing tools from a MUI Pack separately from Office

You can provide proofing tools from a MUI Pack for users to install separately from your Office installation. One option is for users to install tools for themselves from the MUI Pack administrative installation point, as described in the section “Creating an administration installation point for proofing tools from a MUI Pack” earlier in this chapter.

Another option is to provide a customized deployment by giving users a MUI Pack Setup command line (for example, in a batch file) that includes a transform file with the options you choose. Specify the Setup.exe program in one of the MUI Pack folders on the administrative installation point.

For example, the Setup command line to install proofing tools from a German MUI Pack might be:

\\server1\share\office\1031\Setup.exe /qb TRANSFORMS=Mui.mst
