Using FrontPage to Manage a Web Site

Internet Information Server (IIS) is a network file and application server designed for high-traffic, commercial Web sites. IIS is a component of Windows NT Server. Because it is tightly integrated with the Windows NT Server operating system, IIS allows you to use the built-in security of Windows NT Server and the NT File System (NTFS) to build powerful, flexible, and secure Internet and intranet sites.

Note

Because the operating system requirement for this course is Windows 95, not Windows NT, Microsoft Personal Web Server for Windows 95 will be used in the exercises instead of IIS.

After this lesson you will be able to
  • List the features of Internet Information Server.
  • Use FrontPage to create and manage a Web site.
Estimated lesson time 25 minutes

IIS allows networks to host a new generation of dynamic and engaging Web content. You do not have to learn a new scripting language or learn how to compile applications in order to use IIS. IIS fully supports VBScript, Microsoft Visual Basic, Microsoft Visual J++, and Java components , and supports CGI and WinCGI, and ISAPI extensions and filters.

IIS also supports Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), File Transfer Protocol (FTP), and gopher information protocols. IIS is highly extensible through the use of both the common gateway interface (CGI) and the Internet Server application programming interface (ISAPI).

Note

The current version of IIS is available free from the Microsoft Web site (http://www.microsoft.com) and is on Windows NT Service Pack 2.
