Lesson 3: Microsoft Cryptography API (CryptoAPI)

Application Implementations

The Cryptography API provides services that enable application developers to add authentication, encoding, and encryption to their Win32-based applications. You can use the functions in the CryptoAPI without knowing anything about the underlying implementation, in much the same way as you use a graphics library without knowing anything about the particular graphics hardware configuration.

A variety of applications can use the CryptoAPI, such as:

  • Online conferencing.
  • Secure WAN transport.
  • Customer authentication.
  • Banking applications.
  • File encryption and decryption utilities.
  • E-mail applications.
  • Collaborative workgroup applications.
