ClientServer Systems

Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) is a standard programming interface for building database solutions for Microsoft Windows. ODBC uses database-specific drivers, much like Windows uses a certain printer driver based on the manufacturer and model of a particular printer. Developers can create their own ODBC drivers or use commercially available drivers. When creating your own driver, you must meet ODBC compliance criteria.

This lesson describes ODBC and the Windows components used to implement ODBC drivers.

After this lesson you will be able to:
  • Describe the purpose of ODBC.
  • Explain the role of the ODBC driver manager.
  • Implement an ODBC data source name .
  • Identify ODBC driver conformance levels.
Estimated lesson time 35 minutes
