Localization translates and adapts a software product for use in a different language. In addition to adapting screen information and documentation for international use, help files, scenarios, templates, models, and sample files should also be localized.

Language is not the only relevant factor when localizing an interface. Items such as icons and symbols must also be localized because their meaning may differ across cultures. For example, users in the United States may recognize a rounded mailbox with a flag on the side as an icon for a mail program, but users in other countries may not make the same connection.

This lesson describes techniques for localizing applications.

After this lesson you will be able to
  • Explain the use of resource files in application development.
  • Describe Unicode and its purpose.
Estimated lesson time 25 minutes
