This chapter describes how Microsoft Search (MSSearch), the full-text search component of Microsoft^® SharePoint^™ Portal Server 2001, functions in a multilingual environment. In addition, it reviews the process that MSSearch applies when crawling, filtering, and querying the full-text index for content. It also provides an explanation of other factors to consider when crawling, filtering, and conducting search queries in a multilingual environment.

A locale is defined as the language environment defined for a SharePoint Portal Server computer. A multilingual environment is defined as an environment that contains documents in multiple locales. This can include one or more servers with different locales and may also include different client locales. The servers and the clients may be in different locales.
