Chapter 2: Oracle Migration Project Planning

 < Day Day Up >

Overview

Migrating from the Oracle RDBMS to DB2 UDB requires proper planning, whether you perform the migration on your own or use IBM resources. Many migration tools are available, most notably the IBM DB2 Migration ToolKit (MTK). Furthermore, resources are available to assist with estimating the actual cost of the migration, and the estimation of required resources. Unexpected delays in project execution can be avoided by following well planned migration procedures.

This chapter introduces the common process of migration and porting. The planning process, as well as the available tools and resources are documented in this chapter. Detailed migration steps can be found in Chapters 4 through Chapter 7. The migration tasks discussed in this chapter include:

  • Project planning

  • Migration preparation

  • Database structure porting

  • Performance tuning

  • IBM migration service offering
