Resources are defined by Content Management Server as any content stored in a resource gallery, although they tend to be multimedia enhancements to Web pages. In most Web sites, the most common type of resource is an image. Other common types of resources include sound and video clips. Any other types of content can be stored as a resource, but will usually be shown on Web pages as downloadable links rather than embedded within the Web page itself. A common example is fiscal year-end statistics in a Word or PDF document.
The purpose of resources in Content Management Server is to provide a mechanism for maintaining a centralized location for preapproved images, videos, and so on, generally for use on multiple Web pages. Because access to galleries, including resource galleries, can be controlled using rights groups, control over who can access which resources can easily be implemented.
