Exam Highlights

Before taking the exam, review the key points and terms that are presented in this chapter. Return to the lessons for additional practice.

Key Points

  • If circular logging is enabled, incremental and differential backups cannot be used.

  • Transaction logs and database files should be placed on different physical disks (not just on different partitions). Transaction log paths are configured at the storage group level, and database paths are configured at the mailbox store level.

  • Deleted mailboxes can be reconnected to an Active Directory user account in Exchange System Manager if the Deleted Mailbox Retention period has not expired.

  • If you have a domain in an Exchange organization that has only servers running Exchange Server 5.5, you must install a Recipient Update Service into that domain to update address lists.

Key Terms

circular logging A process by which transaction log files are reused in order to conserve disk space. With circular logging enabled, neither incremental nor full backups can be performed, and in case of disaster, it is only possible to restore the Exchange data to the point of the last full backup.

transaction log Exchange Server 2003 first writes data to a transaction log file, and the data is later committed to the actual database. This process significantly improves the performance of Exchange Server 2003 because the database is not faced with the same level of read/write requests it would otherwise have if the data was written directly to the database.

storage group Storage groups contain Exchange Server 2003 databases, which can be either mailbox stores or public stores. Exchange Server 2003, Standard Edition, supports only a single storage group on a server. Exchange Server 2003, Enterprise Edition, supports up to four storage groups, with each containing up to five databases.

Recipient Update Service The Recipient Update Service is responsible for ensuring that address list membership is updated and replicated throughout the Exchange Server 2003 organization. An instance of the Recipient Update Service must exist in each domain that has Exchange servers of any version participating in the organization.
