Troubleshooting Lab

In this lab, you will configure a recipient policy to add a secondary e-mail address and then troubleshoot why the policy change does not take effect.

Before proceeding with this lab, you must have completed the previous exercises in this chapter and have configured the user accounts with their Department, Office, and Company attributes as previously defined.

Exercise 1: Create a Recipient Policy

  1. Start Exchange System Manager. Expand the Recipients container, right-click Recipient Policies, point to New, and then click Recipient Policy.

  2. Create a recipient policy that will apply a second SMTP address of @fabrikam.com. Set it to be the primary address, which will cause the @contoso.com address to become the secondary SMTP address.

  3. Filter the recipient policy to all users who have the Company attribute of Fabrikam. Click Find Now to view the results of the query and observe some of the names of users. Click OK to save the changes.

  4. Confirm all the Exchange Server 2003 prompts, and return to Exchange System Manager after finishing the creation of the recipient policy.

  5. Start the Active Directory Users And Computers console. Edit the properties of Bob Gage, and then click the E-Mail Addresses tab. Observe that his settings have not been updated, despite having the Automatically Update E-Mail Addresses Based On Recipient Policy option selected. Quit the user's properties.

Exercise 2: Apply the Recipient Policy

  1. Return to Exchange System Manager. Right-click the recipient policy you just created and click Apply This Policy Now.

  2. If prompted by Exchange System Manager, confirm that you want to apply the policy.

  3. Return to Active Directory Users And Computers. Edit the properties of Bob Gage again, and then click the E-Mail Addresses tab. Observe that his e-mail addresses have been updated to reflect the changes made by the recipient policy. Quit the user's properties.
