Chapter Summary

  • Exchange Server 2003 will fail to install if hardware resources are inadequate, if the operating system is not as specified, if necessary services are not started, or if Active Directory or DNS are not accessible. When installing on a Windows Server 2003 member server, you also need to install and enable ASP.NET.

  • You can use support tools such as netdiag and dcdiag to check network connectivity, and DNS and Active Directory operation. Performance logs can be used for troubleshooting server health. An alert can be set to indicate a problem associated with a particular resource.

  • Disk storage systems need to be monitored frequently. Limiting the size of mailboxes and public stores can lessen storage problems. Memory fragmentation is a problem in clusters, and several counters are available to help monitor the problem. Recovery storage groups can be used to test backup and restore. Many of the problems related to public folders are caused by incorrect permission settings and by not restricting the right to create top-level public folders.

  • Protocol logging provides a detailed record of every event on a protocol virtual server. You can also increase the range of events that are written to event viewer by configuring diagnostic logging. Firewall and virus logs contain information about attacks that have been made on your organization. You should check them regularly.

  • ARP resolves IP addresses to MAC addresses. You can use the arp utility to display and manage the ARP cache. You can use command-line utilities such as ping, tracert, ipconfig, and pathping to diagnose network connectivity problems. Nbtstat and netstat return NetBIOS and TCP/IP statistics, respectively.
