Before You Begin

To perform the exercises in this chapter, you need the following hardware and software:

  • Two Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition, servers installed in the tailspintoys.com Active Directory directory service domain. Server01 should be a domain controller, and Server02 should be a member server.

    Note

Provided that Server01 and Server02 are configured as described above, the actual domain name does not matter. If your domain name is not tailspintoys.com, there is no need to change it.

  • Server01 should be an enterprise root certification authority (CA) server. (If you are unsure of how to install Certificate Services, please refer to the Windows Server 2003 help files.)

  • Exchange Server 2003, Enterprise Edition, should be installed on both servers. Server01 and Server02 should be back-end and front-end servers, respectively.

  • Preferably, a modem should be installed on Server02. This is not essential.

  • A Domain Name System (DNS) server needs to be available. Typically, DNS is installed on the domain controller.

  • You need to have created and configured an additional SMTP server. This is one of the practices in Chapter 9, "Virtual Servers."

Real World: Experimentation with Third-Party Servers and Client

Experienced users often want to expand their networks so they can carry out further experiments. In this chapter, for example, you might find it valuable to install additional client hosts (such as UNIX hosts) and to use messaging systems other than Exchange Server 2003. In this case (and given that most of us have limited budgets), you should consider the use of products such as Connectix Virtual PC (www.connectix.com) or VMWare (www.vmware.com).
