Recommended Reading

  • Cooper, Alan. About Face: The Essentials of User Interface Design. Foster City, CA: IDG Books Worldwide, Inc., 1995.
  • Chapter 1,"Goal-Directed Design," and Chapter 2, "Software Design," present an excellent discussion of why software often doesn't satisfy user's goals. Chapter 34, "Where Do We Go from Here?", presents an interesting but not so excellent theory that programmers can't design user interfaces.

  • Norman, Donald A. The Design of Everyday Things. New York, NY: Currency/Doubleday, 1990.
  • Chapter 6, "The Design Challenge," discusses why designers have different goals than users and how designers are not typical users, giving several good examples.
