Setup Settings vs. Program Settings

Users want to be able to use a program immediately once it has been installed. For the program to work, it may need to have some basic settings made. Should these settings be made within the setup program or within the main program itself? Of course, it depends on the type of setting. If a setting requires access to the distribution media, make it part of the setup. If a setting is required for the program to run at all, it should also be part of the setup. Otherwise, use default settings and let the user make changes from within the program itself as needed. This approach simplifies the setup process and gives the user the opportunity to understand which settings he wants to make.

TIP
If a setting requires the distribution media or is required for the program to run, make it part of the setup. Otherwise, make it part of the program itself.
