User Testing on the Cheap

You can perform user testing cost effectively. Nielsen calls this goal "discount usability engineering," whereas Bruce Tognazzini calls it "user testing on the cheap." But whatever you call it, the fact is that you do not need an expensive soundproof usability lab with one-way mirrors and Ph.D. psychologists in white lab coats. If these resources were true requirements, few organizations would be able to perform user testing. You can do effective user testing with bare-bones facilities. What really matters is setting realistic goals and giving proper instructions to the test user. Of course, you should use such resources if you have them lying around.
