Chapter 12. Thought Leadership

Never tattle; always make fun of people who appear differently from you. Never say anything unless you're sure that everyone feels exactly the way you do.

Homer Simpson, Rules of the Playground

The members of this author team play an active role in shaping the future of enterprise architecture. We have participated in various standards committees and collectively authored about a dozen books in subject areas including Web services, XML, project management, and software development. The refinement of provocative ideas coupled with practical examples throughout our collective body of knowledge will help extend this notion even further. You will find us participating at many industry conferences and serving as keynote speakers.

The savage pursuit of excellence in our professional lives has caused us to explore passionately how architecture is best created and realized. Many times, the best approach is not the prescription found elsewhere. Sometimes, we have good information we would like to share, but it does not fit into a particular chapter or is hard to classify, though it has merit for inclusion in a discussion.

Sometimes, thought leadership involves the ability to throw out ideas in a rough form and allow others to react and provide further refinement. This chapter departs from the typical literary formulas and opens doors you may choose to close or open further. With this in mind, we offer you short narratives, varied thoughts and diagrams we feel will bring value to your enterprise architecture. We consider this our manifesto.
