This book is dedicated to Tim Barwick, Arnold Brackman, Robert Pratt, and Richard H. Slone, all teachers of one type or another who showed me how to hone my craft and find my voice in helping others.

Acknowledgments

Few books are ever the product of one person, and this book is no exception.

The first thoughts for this book were written down the morning after the attacks on New York and Washington, D.C. on September 11, 2001, when brave people at both sites were already talking about how they could get back to work.

Yet this project was just a bundle of notes until Ellen Dendy, an acquisitions editor at Sybex, came to me and asked if I was interested in doing a book on PC disaster and recovery for real people. We both agreed it was time for a book of this type.

As the manuscript progressed, Brianne Agatep, the developmental editor, and Dennis Fitzgerald, the production editor, plus Don Fuller, the technical editor, and Sarah Lemaire, the copyeditor, brought their gifted and efficient diligence to making certain all the necessary material was covered, checked and double-checked, and clear in its presentation.

Thanks, too, to Emily Sherrill Weadock, who shared her photographs for this book, and to John Bedell, who offered many great tips and ideas.

In addition, I must acknowledge the thousands of work associates, friends, and users who have shared their experiences and their suggestions during my many years of providing online help for Windows, hardware, and applications through online services like America Online and The Microsoft Network, and through Internet newsgroups.

And finally, let me say farewell to the Pentium II 350MHz system that gave up its life for this project so that other PCs might process onward. I certainly got my money’s worth, considering it saw me through four years, almost a dozen books and guides, hundreds of articles and columns, thousands of newsgroup postings, two dozen beta tests, four operating systems, three disasters, and one major move. And, interestingly, it survived two years longer than the manufacturer who made it.
