78. Research Aids

Yojimbo (www.barebones.com, $39.00), SOHO Notes (www.chronosnet.com, $39.95), and Mori (www.hogbaysoftware.com, $27.95) all collect bookmarks, clippings, and media. In terms of usability, their uncluttered two-column layout beats Microsoft OneNote's "nested tabs" interface hands down.

Notebook (www.circusponies.com, $49.95, shown in Figure 32) provides similar functionality, but with a "magic notebook" interface that generates hyperlinked tables of contents and automatic indexes. In addition to storing and indexing content, DEVONthink Pro (www.devon-technologies.com, $79.95) locates unexpected connections within your data and integrates with DEVONagent ($49.95), a research-focused search application.

Figure 32. Notebook looks like a notebook, but acts like a combination indexer, outliner, and database. Tables of contents and indexes are generated automatically.

Tristan Harris's Bibliographer (download.com, free) reduces MLA bibliography development to a fill-in-the-blank exercise. Want more power? Bookends (www.sonnysoftware.com, $99.00) pulls reference data from Amazon.com, Internet library searches, and PubMed.
