Force Quit Stuck Applications

While Mac OS X is a very stable operating system, individual applications may not be quite so stable. Occasionally, an application gets stuck, and you need to force quit it to close its windows. The advantage of using Mac OS X, compared to earlier versions of Mac OS and some other operating systems, is that when one application gets stuck, you can quit it without it affecting the entire operating system.

If an application doesn’t respond for a while, press z-OPTION-ESCAPE, or select the Apple Menu | Force Quit. This brings up the Force Quit Applications window, as shown in Figure 13-11.

Figure 13-11: If you need to force quit an application that’s stuck or not responding, press z-Option-Escape to bring up the Force Quit Applications window.

If an application has really frozen, it will usually appear in red in this list. Click the name of the application you want to quit, and then click Force Quit. You can also relaunch the Finder from this window if it seems to be stuck. Click its name, and the Force Quit button changes to Relaunch. Click the Relaunch button and the Finder quits and restarts immediately.

Shortcut

To force quit the frontmost application, without even bringing up the Force Quit window, just press z-SHIFT-OPTION-ESCAPE. This should kill the application immediately.
