An Overview of Mac OS X

For the most part, Mac OS X works the same as Mac OS 9. You’ll discover that you have the same icons and menus, that windows work more or less the same, and that your applications do the same things they did before. First, you’ll notice the new interface: Apple calls this Aqua, and all the widgets, the controls, such as buttons and scroll bars, check boxes and radio buttons, are colorful and easier to distinguish.

The Aqua interface includes many features that make it more alive: Apple uses slight effects of transparency for menus and certain dialogs, and shadows and 3-D effects to put objects in context more effectively. The overall display is snappy and features better contrast between different elements, so you can understand what the operating system does and what it expects you to do. And, text is displayed much better, using anti-aliasing, which makes fonts always appear smooth onscreen.

While Finder windows are different, you’ll find the two Finder views you’re familiar with— Icon view and List view—work the same as under OS 9. All in all, Mac OS X is the logical next-generation operating system for Apple. Plenty of differences exist, but there are enough similarities that you don’t need to worry about not feeling right at home.
